This year, 14 sailors received Merchant Navy Medals, including Captain Dan Cross of Liverpool.

Captain Dan Cross received the prestigious Merchant Navy Medal for his efforts in restoring the iconic SS Daniel Adamson, which first set sail in 1903.

The ‘Danny’, as she is affectionately known, was built in what is now Birkenhead Dockyard in 1903 and was originally named Ralph Brocklebank after a director of the London and North Western Railway .

Through Dan’s restoration efforts, he has helped young people of all backgrounds and abilities to learn, participate and eventually volunteer with the ship’s crew and pursue careers in engineering and the maritime sector.

Captain Dan Cross said, “I am deeply honored to receive this wonderful medal alongside prestigious recipients over the years. I played a small part in saving and restoring the Daniel Adamson to working order for future generations to enjoy and enjoy.

“It is often said that the ship runs on two things, steam and volunteers, and that reflects what a wonderful team effort the project is.

“Having worked on harbor tugs for almost thirty years, the work of the harbor tug is often overlooked. As a key part of ensuring that goods continue to flow in and out of UK ports and ports, it is great that harbor towing services are recognized and the work we do can be remembered at through ships like the Daniel Adamson which also offers excellent training and educational opportunities.
