Entered peacefully into rest at St. Lawrence Lodge on Wednesday, August 3, 2022 at the age of 87. Beloved husband of Jean (Arber -Nolan) for 32 years.
Proud father of Wendy Onstein (Charles), grandfather of Brad, (Kaylee), Carrie (Will) and great grandson James.
He is survived by the children of Jean, Graham, Lloyd, Mark, Terry, Sandy and Blair as well as Tom McMillian Sheila Hunter. He was a special grandfather to Lesley, Ryan, Sarah, Shannon and Robin. Loving Bumpa to Liam. He also leaves several nieces and nephews.
Beloved brother of Joan Burns (Bob), Donnie (Peggy), Sharyn Manley and Gary (Heather). Brother-in-law of Barry (Margaret) and Tony (Val) Arber.
Ron was predeceased by his sister Iris and brother-in-law Ron Gardiner and brother-in-law Phil Manley and by Wendy’s mother, Margaret Weir.
Ron was born March 2, 1935 to Milton and Alice Helmer in Cornwall. He resided in the village of Newington until the age of 16 when he went to work for Patterson’s Steam Ship Lines on the St. Lawrence River and Great Lakes. For a short time, he worked for the department stores Woolworth in Ottawa and then in Brockville. In 1960 he got a job with Automatic Electric. Starting at the bottom and working your way up. He led a busy and rewarding career there and made many friends.
He began a second career at the Irvine Funeral Home where he truly enjoyed working with families as they mourned their loss. He became a valued member of the Irvine team. He loved this job so much that he stayed until shortly after his 80th birthday.
One of his proudest accomplishments is his role in building the Wall Street Village. From visioning, fundraising and building, he volunteered hours of his time and talent to bring the project to fruition.
Family and friends can call at the Irvine Memorial Chapel and Visitor Center in Roselawn on Wednesday, August 10, 2022. Visiting hours will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Celebration of Life at 12 p.m. followed by burial and reception.
Donations are respectfully requested to the St. Lawrence Lodge 3rd Floor Activation Cedar Unit. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at St. Lawrence Lodge for the care and kindness they extended to Ron and his family.
