Delhi’s best educational institutions, social and cultural centers, and the country’s premier medical body are among nearly 6,000 entities that are deemed to have been registered under the Foreign Contributions Act (Regulation) (FCRA). ended on Saturday.

Either these entities did not apply for the FCRA license renewal or their applications were rejected by the Union’s Home Office, officials said.

According to the MHA website, organizations and entities whose registration under the FCRA has ceased include IIT-Delhi, Jamia Millia Islamia, Indian Medical Association, Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, Indira Gandhi National Center for the Arts, Indian Institute of Public Administration, Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial Foundation, Lady Shri Ram College for Women, Delhi College of Engineering and Oxfam India. The MHA regulates the activities of NGOs and associations registered under the FCRA. Registration is compulsory for any association and NGO to receive foreign funding. There were 22,762 NGOs registered by the FCRA as of Friday. On Saturday, the number fell to 16,829 as 5,933 NGOs were removed from the list.

Officials said FCRA licenses for 18,778 organizations expired between September 29, 2020 and December 31, 2021. Of these, 12,989 have applied for renewal.

Since 5,789 organizations did not apply, they were considered to have ceased to be registered organizations, an official said. In addition, renewal requests from 179 organizations were rejected for various reasons.

Some of the entities whose FCRA registration has ceased include the Medical Council of India, Emmanuel Hospital Association, Tuberculosis Association of India, Vishwa Dharmayatan, Maharishi Ayurveda Pratishthan, etc.
